M1D1: The Modern Era of Terrorism and the Classical Continuum Ideology
There has not been an overarching movement or political environment to support the terrorist right; nor has there been an ideology that bound together dissidents in different countries. Exceptions to this general observation are found in countries with unstable political environments that allow for the operation of armed paramilitaries or death squads in long-term campaigns of terror. These paramilitaries have been notoriously brutal, and many were closely affiliated with government security agencies, such as during the Argentine “Dirty War.”
Respond to the following:
1. Identify two groups of modern terrorism – one on the left (Left-wing extremism) and one on the right (right-wing extremism). Then, compare and contrast the themes and characteristics of these groups compared to their counterparts from the classical continuum.
Left Wing Terrorist Groups: (Anarchist), Red Army Faction (RAF), Red Brigades, Irish National Liberation Army (INLA), Japanese Red Army
M1D2: Justification of Left- and Right-Wing Violence
Choose one of the following viewpoints and answer the questions below for your initial post:
-Identify one left-wing movement. How would you describe the characteristics and themes of this left-wing dissident movement?
-Review the goals and objectives of this organization. How do they demonstrate goals to reform or destroy an existing system? Do these actions seem reasonable to you? Do they justify violent behavior? Explain your answer.
-Identify one right-wing movement. How would you describe the characteristics and themes of this rightist dissident movement?
-Review the goals and objectives of this organization. In what ways do right-wing movements protect their value system? Are their actions reasonable or warrant violence? Explain your answer.
