Data protection and network security

Data protection is a significant concern for businesses. Consumers in the market have become increasingly concerned about the amount of information available to corporations and other entities. Advancements in technology have amplified the concerns about the risks to data that can be linked to a weak network security. Ideally, a network security facilitates protection of any misuse, access, and hacking of directories and files in a computer network system. The most significant threats to a network are spyware, worms, viruses, identity theft, and adware. It can be said that network security is a subset of cybersecurity and it deals with taking measures to protect online information against unauthorized access.

Data protection is very important for network protection. However, there are a number of challenges to data protection and this, of course, has a detrimental effect top network protection. Essentially, the key challenges to data protection include data security threats, rapid data growth, and reliable data recovery. Most companies do not have the resources to manage data growth. Given the significant amount of information divulged by consumers as they interact with companies, it has become a challenge for corporations to keep up without excessive costs in ensuring the safety of the data. This is especially relevant for companies with tight budgets.

Accidental data deletion, viruses, and data corruption are threats to the continuity of a business. As technology becomes more complex, it becomes more difficult for organizations to recover business-critical data in an efficient manner. Notably, a number of businesses have experienced recovery failure caused by the unreliability of media. Human error also plays a huge role when it comes to data protection. Ideally, accidental deletion and bad software updates make up a significant percentage of application downtime and data loss and thereby causing significant issues to an organization’s network security. This also has a financial impact on companies as such errors lead to financial repercussions.

To solve data protection issues for network securities, it is imperative that businesses comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which was initiated in 2018. This regulation requires businesses to store and process data lawfully and transparency (Mittal & Sharma, 2017). Ideally, compliance with these policies and regulations will ensure that companies act on data security and implement processes and technology that prevent data-theft oriented cyber-attacks and data breaches which will have the effect of increasing consumer confidence in business’ online security. This can also be a competitive advantage for organizations.

Cloud data protection can also be a significant solution to data protection in network securities. Given the technology enhancements, adoption of cloud data protection by companies is quite easy. Typically, cloud data protection uses industry standard encryption algorithms (Chen & Zhao,2012). Numerous encryption points eliminate concerns about data security over public or private networks. As the data will be encrypted form the source, in transit and in the cloud, security is enhanced significantly. Cloud data protection also allows centralization of resources and enhancing security and reliability of back up tasks.

Data protection is important to network securities and this, in turn, has an impact on businesses. Three data protection market is worth at least 49.72 billion dollars and it is projected to reach 119.95 billion by 2022 (, 2018). Its significance to network security is implied by the need for companies to adopt data protection policies and technologies to ensure their future.
