Introduction

The neighborhood I lived in before attending CSUN was Huntington Beach, CA. The purpose of this project is to analyze the origin of my neighborhood and its evolution to its current state today. This report will also include how I live, work and play in the city. After my analysis, I will provide recommendations for improvements for the betterment of the neighborhood.

Findings

Huntington Beach is becoming a gentrified city and the population has increased by approximately 11,000 people in the last 10 years (City of Huntington Beach, 2018). Huntington Beach has the fourth largest population in Orange County and experiences more than 16 million beach visitors each year (City of Huntington Beach, CA). The city plans to build more seaside apartments for it’s plan to “urbanize” the city (Shar, S., 2016). The major corporate employers located in Huntington Beach include:

The Boeing Company

Quiksilver

Cambro Manufacturing

Hyatt Regency Hotel

Hilton Beach Front Resort

C& D Aerospace

with the majority of employment falling in

sales/related jobs

(City of Huntington Beach, 2018).

Recommendations

Based upon my assessment of my findings, the cities financial stability depends upon visitors. Making the main ”cash cow”, tourism. But though tourism, the city is developing land to build on-the-beach shopping malls, inclusive of Victoria Secret and Sephora retail stores. The city is becoming a replication of Santa Monica and is losing its natural beauty and home town feel, to corporate America. I would like to see:

The city stop building apartments and shopping complexes, and re-invest in the local small business owner

Stop catering to the tourist and amplify the unique attributes Huntington Beach has to offer without a Forever 21 on the sand

If the city keeps deciding to build

structures, there will be no natural

areas anymore, which initially drew

people here in the first place.

Huntington Beach has one of the largest populations in Orange County. The city was first inhabited with an Native American Tribe, the Tongva, and then was taken over by Spanish Settlers. The city’s main industry was Rancho and barley crops, due to the fertile soil near the ocean. The oil boom in 1920, caused the city to change from an agricultural town to one filled with oil pumpjacks. After the last oil strike, the city filled with residents. The present day Huntington Beach is full of residential housing, shopping centers, apartment complexes and restaurants, with the main industry being tourism.

Origin of the Neighborhood

Huntington Beach was originally occupied by the Tongva people (City of Huntington Beach , n.d.). The neighborhood of Huntington Beach developed by the following:

A Spanish Soldier, received a Spanish land grant in 1784, which gave him what is now the city of Huntington Beach (Campbell , S., n.d.)

The land was originally used to ran cattle, horses and raised barley crops for the main industry of Rancho (Wikipedia, 2018).

The soil near the ocean was fertile making it an ideal place to raise barley, by 1889 the city had a small group of settlers (City of Huntington Beach , n.d.).

8

Evolution of the Neighborhood

The city has evolved tremendously since it was first created. The following events caused the neighborhood to change:

A syndicate was formed and the plan was to build a town that rivaled Atlantic City (City of Huntington Beach , n.d.).

The cities original developer was the Huntington Company, ran by Henry Huntington, whom which the city is named after (Wikipedia, 2018).

The city remained a sleepy beach town, til the oil boom in 1920

In 1920 Huntington Beach had the largest oil deposit in California, which started the initial city growth.

After the last oil strike in 1953, people started moving in by the thousands (Beach Cities Realty, n.d.).

Huntington Beach became the fastest growing city in the continental U.S. (City of Huntington Beach , n.d.).

In the 1980’s, the Douglas Aircraft Space Systems Center was built, which today is Boeing (one of HB’s largest employers) (City of Huntington Beach , n.d.).

Present Day

Huntington Beach today has over 200,000 residents and is the most populated beach in Orange County (Wikipedia, 2018).

The city has changed from agricultural and oil economic dependent to a tourism as the primary revenue source (City of Huntington Beach, n.d.).

The city has removed it’s oil pumpjacks for shopping centers and restaurants (Wikipedia, 2018).

The cities major employer is Boeing. Huntington’s Beaches attract many tourist, special events and sporting competitions annually, inclusive of the AVP beach volleyball tour, US Open of Surfing, the fourth of July Parade and Bolsa Chica Wetlands.

How I Live in My Neighborhood

I have lived in Huntington Beach for most of my life, moving away just 2 years ago.

This city has everything needed to live, play and work.

Location

Shelter

Food/Shopping

Living

Shelter:

My last residence in Huntington Beach was an apartment I shared with three other roommates. My apartment was biking distance from the beach, walking distance from the grocery store and other shopping, and close to the freeway. There are many apartment buildings and residential neighborhoods in Huntington Beach.

Food/Shopping:

When I lived in Huntington Beach, I shopped for groceries at the local Sprouts near my apartment. Additionally, one of my favorite spots to shop for goods was Katin Surf Shop. The city has many shops for surf goods, specialty grocery stores and a variety of restaurants.

Location:

Huntington Beach is located between Sunset Beach and Newport Beach, South of Westminster.

12

Work

When I lived in Huntington Beach, I worked at Vanguard Aquatics as a Water polo coach for 10u girls, 12u boys, 14u boys & 16u boys teams.

Play

Some of my favorite things to do in my neighborhood include: surfing, body surfing, biking, skateboarding, cliff jumping, stand-up paddle boarding and simply, just hanging out and enjoying the beach!

Recommendations

Through my analysis of my neighborhood, I’ve noticed that the city is developing more land for shopping, apartment buildings and restaurants. The ”Pacific City” building project is funded by a large real estate investment firm, DJM Capital Partners (Vincent, R., 2014). The goal is to attract locals as well as tourist to it’s $135 million development. Huntington Beach’s tourist economy is booming and DJM Capital Partners is trying to capitalize on that (Vincent, R., 2014)..

Although the shopping center is already built, I would recommend the stop to the building of coastal apartments. The city is trying to attract more out of county residents, building on an already maximized population. The increase in population will put a strain on resources and cause housing prices to rise. Therefore, gentrifying the neighborhood and causing individuals who have been residents for long periods of time to be forced to move out of their homes. The city will be over crowded and polluted, much like Santa Monica, due to the focus on building more coastal apartments.
