Course Description And Purpose
This is an advanced undergraduate psychology course designed to introduce students to theories of personality within the field of psychology. Students will get an opportunity to review and discuss various theoretical models, the historical context in which they were developed, and how empirical research interacts with these theories.

Students will be able to:
- Review, compare and contrast various theoretical models of personality development.
- Gain an understanding of different methods of personality research
- Comprehend the applied implications of personality research
- Evaluate existing theories from a variety of perspectives

EQUITABLE TREATMENT OF STUDENTS
It is a requirement of FIU that all students receive equitable treatment. This means that the professor may not apply the policies outlined in this syllabus to some students and not others, such as allowing certain students to retake exams, turn work in late, or complete extra work outside of the polices outlined in this syllabus.
COURSE MAKE-UP POLICY
There will be no make-ups for missed assignments or quizzes. Make-ups for the exams will be considered on a case-by-case basis and only in the case of a verifiable, serious illness requiring medical attention or other emergency that prevented the student from taking the exam (or completing the assignment) for the entire period the exam (or assignment) was available. Documentation of the medical condition or emergency will be required. If it’s due to a death in the family, the student will need to submit a death certificate. A note from a doctor stating only that the student was “under care” is NOT sufficient and will not be accepted. Any exceptions will be at the full discretion of the instructor. If a make-up exam is granted, it will be a DIFFERENT version of the exam.
If you wish to make an exception request, you must do the following:
1. Send me a message via the email provided in your syllabus 24 hours before the deadline of the assignment or exam you are requesting an exception for. If you cannot notify me in advance then you must notify be within 48 hours of the deadline.
2. Send appropriate documentation (please see above policy or below technology policy) within 48 hours of initial message sent to me requesting an exception.
3. If exception is granted, the make-up work must be submitted within 7 days of deadline (24 hours for exams).
Please note: If you enroll in the course late, you will need to notify me as soon as you enroll and you must provide documentation from the University one-stop office showing the date you were enrolled in the course to make up any missed assignments.
COURSE TECHNOLOGY POLICY
A downside of taking a fully online course is that technology can sometimes be problematic. You are responsible for ensuring the computer(s) you use to access this course are compatible with the FIU Online system requirements. If a technology problem interferes with your ability to complete work or submit work on time, you may be given a deadline extension or allowed another accommodation ONLY IF FIU ONLINE CONFIRMS THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY CANVAS. If FIU Online cannot make such a determination, no deadline extension or other accommodations will be granted. There will be no exceptions to this policy. There will be no make-ups for any missed or incomplete assignment or quiz due to technology problems other than under the condition specified above.
If you experience a technology problem, please do the following:
- Take a screen shot of the issue/error you encountered.
- Contact FIU Online student technical support. Provide them with the screen shot you have taken. They will investigate your claim and may be able to correct the problem right away.
- Send me an email right away if the problem impacts your grade. For example, if the system stops functioning while you are taking a quiz. Briefly describe the problem, include the screen shot and the ticket number that FIU online tech support has provided you.
FIU Online will send me an email explaining your claim and the cause of the problem, if they are able to identify it. I will let you know what FIU Online reports to me and whether or not a deadline extension or accommodation will be granted.
- Missing grades or grading errors must be addressed within 7 days of the grade being made available to the student.
- End of semester (finals week) requests for grading, make-up work or deadline exceptions will not be accepted or approved.
- Requests for grade exceptions or last minute extra credit will not be accepted or approved. Asking for any exceptions or last minute credit if you did not complete assignments or exams throughout the semester will not be considered.
- Requests for the professor to calculate your grade at any point throughout the semester will not be granted unless you send a message with your own grade calculations based on the syllabus.
INCOMPLETE GRADES As per University policy, a grade of incomplete will only be given in the case of definite extenuating circumstances (e.g., serious illness, death in the family, etc.) and only if you have completed at least 60% of the course work and have a passing grade in the course at the time the request is made. You will be asked to provide proof (e.g., doctor’s note). Being overextended at home, work, or school does not constitute a valid reason for a grade of incomplete.
RELIGIOUS HOLY DAYS
The FIU policy on religious holy days as stated in the University Catalog and Student Handbook will be followed in this class. Any student may request to be excused from (on-line) class to observe a religious holy day of his or her faith. Students needing to be excused from class must provide advance notice to the professor in writing via your FIU email at least five (5) calendar days prior to the religious holy day that will conflict with class time. All work missed must be made up by the student within seven (7) calendar days from the original due date. Assignments, quizzes, or exams available for more than two days will not be considered unless availability coincides with all days of the religious holiday.
Keep in mind that when communicating through text in a course, your body language and tone cannot always be taken into account by others. This makes the words you use even more important. While you should feel free to express your ideas as you would in a face to face course, the following tips should help you as you communicate inside your course:
- DON’T SHOUT! Typing in all caps indicates shouting and might be offensive to others.
- Check your writing for grammar and spelling errors. Nobody’s perfect, but a good writing style will make a better reflection on you and your ideas. Use general systematic options to check you’re spelling before sending/posting communication in an online course.
- Treat your classmates with respect in terms of their privacy and of their opinions. Ask for clarification if you don’t understand what another classmate means or if you feel there might be a conflict.
- Keep it polite and maintain all discussions in the context of a classroom where we are all learning from each other in order to help each other achieve a positive and valuable learning experience.
- Think before you write. Words live for a long time on the Internet, including to some extent in an online class. While you should feel free to express your opinions and participate in class discussions, it is a good idea to think first about the consequences before posting.
- Use proper language and titles. Do not use slang or even profane words in an educational environment, even if they are words you consider “not so bad,” as they may sound offensive to the reader.
- Avoid Spam. Students are prohibited from posting advertisements or commercial solicitations in any area of the course, including on the discussion board or through messages/email, without the express consent of the instructor.
It may be necessary to make some adjustments in the syllabus during the semester in order to respond to unforeseen or extenuating circumstances. Adjustments that are made will be communicated to students in writing via “Announcements” in Canvas. In accordance with FIU Faculty policies, instructors retain the right to modify the course syllabus for any reason throughout the semester provided that:
- Fair and adequate notice is given to enrolled students either by e-mail, in writing, or through online publishing.
- Modifications to the syllabus are not arbitrary or capricious.
- Students are not unfairly disadvantaged by mid-semester changes to grading standards, attendance standards, or performance measures.
Technical Requirements and Skills
One of the greatest barriers to taking an online course is a lack of basic computer literacy. By computer literacy we mean being able to manage and organize computer files efficiently, and learning to use your computer’s operating system and software quickly and easily. Keep in mind that this is not a computer literacy course; but students enrolled in online courses are expected to have moderate proficiency using a computer. Again, this course is fully online and requires reliable internet access. You must plan for and anticipate the possibility of technical problems. You should have a regular, reliable internet source, and plans for a back-up internet source. I do not accept lack of internet access as an excuse for missing course due dates, unless there is a natural disaster and FIU Online and/or Canvas is unavailable. This means you should NOT wait until the last day to submit assignments, take quizzes or exams, or post on the discussion board as you may run the risk that something goes wrong technologically and I will not accept ANY late work under ANY circumstances. If your computer crashes or your regular internet source is unavailable, you may need to travel to your back-up internet source. If you must travel for any reason, remember that course assignments and exams along with any other course requirements may be submitted from any computer with internet access.
It is recommend that you use Mozilla Firefox for the best connection and that you test and submit practice assignments and quizzes from every computer you may be using during the semester to make sure that they all meet the system requirements.

Expectations of this Course
This an online course, which means most (if not all) of the course work will be conducted online. Expectations for performance in an online course are the same for a traditional course. In fact, online courses require a degree of self-motivation, self-discipline, and technology skills which can make these courses more demanding for some students.
Students are expected to:
- Review the how to get started information located in the course content
- Take the Access Quiz and obtain 100% score in order to access the rest of the course content
- Attend and participate in the mandatory syllabus review meeting on Adobe Connect or submit a 2 page summary if you cannot attend
- Submit the Course Agreement Form in order to get access to the rest of the course content
- Introduce yourself to the class during the first week by posting a self-introduction in the appropriate discussion forum (graded)
- Take the practice quiz to ensure that your computer is compatible with Canvas
- Interact online with instructor/s and peers
- Review and follow the course calendar
- Log in to the course at least 3 times per week
- Respond to discussion board postings within 14 days over the course of 3 separate days
- Respond to messages within 2 days
- Submit assignments by the corresponding deadline (found in your syllabus and in the instructions for each assignment)
The instructor/TA will:

Learning the material and successfully completing this course is going to require more than just “cramming” before an exam. In order to do well on my exams you will need do more than just studying a few days before the exam. Being successful in class and in exams involves a 3 phase process, memorize, understand, and apply. Here are several resources to help make you study better:

To ensure effective and quick communication, it is best if you use your FIU student email and include your student ID when communicating with your instructor via email.
Please note that I will not answer questions that can be readily found in the syllabus. There will be a 48 hour communication blackout right before the due date of any major project or paper. This means you will not be receiving responses to any communication within 48 hours of a major assignment being due. The reason for this blackout is to ensure that students are asking questions about these course requirements with enough time for me to respond in a timely fashion so that the student can apply whatever the responses are to their assignment with enough time to submit it by the due date.

This class is strictly online and thus all students are required to log into and regularly utilize Canvas for this course. Everything in this syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the professor. You will be notified via announcements whenever changes are made.
The professor will post announcements throughout the semester. It is the responsibility of the student to read these announcements as they contain important information for or changes to the course. You will receive a copy of these announcements at your FIU email (do not respond to these announcements and make sure you check your FIU email regularly). Your first extra credit assignment is to read through this syllabus and send me an email with a Futurama meme (nothing inappropriate, please) and write in the subject line “Easter egg”. This will earn you two points of extra credit. This opportunity will not be accepted after the 6th week of the semester. Do not share this information with your classmates so that they need to read the syllabus to come across this opportunity.
Keep in mind that your discussion forum postings will likely be seen by other members of the course. Care should be taken when determining what to post.
There are 6 discussion questions offered during the term. Students are required to respond to 5 of these questions.
A discussion board will open for a two-week period. Discussions are designed both to help you explore your career plans in psychology and to encourage you to develop a social support network with your peers. Discussions, by definition, are a back and forth exchange of ideas. Grades are based on the quality of responses and peer-to-peer interaction (see rubric below). These questions are meant to promote a virtual form of “classroom discussion.” Discussions serve as an excellent learning tool since they require application of what has been learned. Keep in mind that your discussion posting will be seen by other members of the course. Therefore, care should be taken when determining what to post. As always, proper grammar and spelling is expected.
Discussion Post Requirements:
- Responses must be well thought out and well written.
- Responses must include 2+ references to the readings, videos, and/or activities assigned for the week.
- Responses must focus on both course material first and personal reflection second.
- Initial responses must be between 350-500 words and posted no later than the Saturday of the first week that the discussion is open by 11:59 p.m. (worth 10 points), responses posted after the first week but before discussions close will be considered late and assessed a late penalty.
- Responses to classmates must include at least two (2) substantive peer interactions (i.e. reply to one or more posts by a classmates using 100 or more words (worth 5 points each, up to 10 points total) in which you offer your own insight or ask probing questions) and posted no later than Saturday by 11:59 p.m.. No responses can be posted to the discussion board once it closes.
- All three responses must take place on separate days. Any post that is completed on the same day as another post will not count towards your required posts for the discussion board.
- Discussion posts that are completed (initial post and peer responses) within the first 7 days of the 14 day period will be assessed extra credit points (1 point per 3-post completed discussion for a total of up to 5 extra credit points).
Note: Reading both the “Discussion Board Rubric” and “Netiquette Guidelines” prior to posting a response will provide you with an excellent framework of my expectations. Although our experiences are valuable and insightful, psychology is a science requiring critical thinking and empirical evidence. Make sure your responses are thoughtful and rooted in course material and referenced accordingly.
At any time during the course, students may also use the discussion board as a means to communicate with peers by posting questions about the material, responses to another point of view from your peer, or new and thoughtful discussion questions. I strongly encourage an active discussion forum!
In order to mitigate any issues with your computer and online assessments, it is very important that you take the “Practice Quiz” from each computer you will be using to take your graded quizzes and exams. It is your responsibility to make sure your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements.
Before being allowed access to the course content, a course access quiz must be taken and passed with a 100% score. The course access quiz covers material presented in the syllabus, videos, and powerpoint presentation provided on the course access folder in the course content page and will not count towards the final grade in the course. The quiz may be taken as many times as necessary in order to achieve a 100% score. Assessments in this course are not compatible with mobile devices and should not be taken through a mobile phone or a tablet. - There will be 5 non-cumulative quizzes and your lowest grade will be dropped
- Quizzes will always be released on Tuesdays and will be due the Saturday of the week it is made available (unless otherwise noted in the instructions).
- Students will have two attempts at each quiz and the highest score will be counted for your overall grade.
- Quizzes will have 10-15 questions and you will be given 10-15 minutes to complete your quiz.
- Quiz grades will be available immediately after your quiz has been submitted.
- There will be 3 non-cumulative exams and your lowest grade will be dropped
- There will be 1 mandatory cumulative final exam.
- Exams will always be released on Thursdays and will be due the Saturday of the week it is made available (except for the final exam).
- Exams will have 50 questions and you will be given 60 minutes to complete your exam.
- Cumulative Final Exam will have 100 questions and you will be given 110 minutes to complete the exam.
- Students will have two attempts at each exam and the highest score will be counted for your overall grade.
- Exam grades will be available immediately after your exam has been submitted.
Note to student: You are only allowed two attempts at each quiz/exam therefore you should not begin a quiz or exam until you are ready to complete the exam and submit it. Once you access a quiz/exam you cannot exit it and re-enter it at a later time. You should NOT navigate away from the exam (visit other webpages, answer messages, etc on your computer) as it will be considered cheating and the system will likely force the exam into completion and whatever you have submitted at that time will be graded. If your exam is submitted automatically by the system because you navigated away from it (yes, online tech support will be able to tell that you navigated away from the exam), you will NOT be given another attempt at the exam and may run the risk of being reported to the University for academic misconduct. You will receive one question at a time but will be able to go back and change your answers before your final submission. Please remember to save your work as you go through the quiz/exam and remember that if you run out of time the system will submit whatever you have already completed and saved. You shouldn’t wait until the last minute to take quizzes or exams as there may be technical difficulties and I will not take that as an excuse for not being able to complete the exam/quiz.
Quizzes and Exams will be multiple choice and true/false and will cover material from the textbook, powerpoint lectures, and video clips.
You will be required to complete a reflection video project on a topic that the instructor will post. You will have more than one topic to choose from. Topics will are posted in the Video Project page of your course and will include more details and instructions on the project itself, including a grading rubric. You will need to record a video responding to your topic. You will need to create a powerpoint presentation that you will incorporate into your presentation.
The video should be exactly 5 minutes in length. Not knowing how to record, edit, upload, etc. video will not be an excuse for not completing this assignment.
- Only links will be accepted (no video files)
- Only posts on the appropriate forum of the discussion board will be accepted (no emailed projects)
- To mitigate any issues with technology, you must upload your project to a video sharing site 24 hours in advance of the deadline
- Late submissions will receive a 20% overall grade reduction per day after the deadline and will require documentation justifying late submission (see Course Make Up Policy section of the syllabus). Do not assume that you can submit this assignment late just because you think you have a justifiable reason.
This assignment is worth 200 points towards your final grade!
EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT
Extra credit will only be available to students who have completed ALL of their assignments. You cannot skip or miss an assignment and submit the extra credit assignment to make up for it. There is no exception to this policy. Student will need to complete a self-conceptualization paper that is a comprehensive perspective of your personality. You will need “The New Personality Self-Portrait” book in order to complete this assignment. You will need to complete the questionnaire and scoring and then write a paper based on the results and incorporate what you’ve learned in class throughout the semester. If you would rather complete the inventory electronically, you can do so here: www.beliefsystems.com The resulting dominant characteristics of your personality with be the central focus of your paper. This paper will consist of three different parts. The first is a short summary of your background history (i.e. culture, religion, education, etc.). Next describe the dominant characteristics of your personality and how they have shaped the person you are today. Finally, you are to pick one or more theories from the class to support your narrative. This paper should be 3-5 pages in length, and double spaced. You will be graded on your ability to demonstrate critical thinking by using one or more theories to relate and anchor to your own personality.
Adobe Connect Pro Meeting
Adobe Connect is an online meeting room where you can interact with your professor and fellow students by sharing screens of files, chat, broadcast live audio, and take part in other interactive online activities. We will be utilizing this tool to conduct office hours and appointments. I will also go over the syllabus during a mandatory online meeting on adobe connect on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 12:00PM EST. You will need to participate in 90% of the live meeting or submit a summary of the recorded meeting, if you are unable to attend, to get access to the course material. The summary must be 2 full pages, double-spaced, and submitted as a Word or PDF document in the corresponding dropbox to be given credit.
Students who wish to discuss course content should schedule an appointment to meet with me in person. If you are unable to meet with me in person we can schedule a virtual meeting via Adobe Connect.
Requirements for using Adobe Connect:
- Disable any window pop-up blocker.
- Adobe Flash Player is required to successfully run your Adobe Connect meeting. You can test your computer to make sure your computer and network connections are properly configured to provide you with the best possible Adobe Connect meeting experience.
- Use of a combination headset and microphone with USB connection is recommended to ensure quality sound and reduce technical difficulties. Reference Adobe Connect (Tutorials & Help) to learn about the tool, how to access your meeting rooms and recordings.
Your final grade in the course is based on the total points you earn for the exams (200 points total) quizzes (100 points total) discussion postings (100 points total) and reflection video (200 points total).
Final Grade: Your points earned divided by the total points available—add the extra credit at the end (i.e. you earned 426 points total, you will earn a “C”—426/600 = .71)
